Favourite Phil Album?

So what's everybodys favourite Phil album? I know...how tough is that? Always changing?

For me, it's 'Hello, I must be Going'...it's one I always come back to. It's got that balance between sheer despair and resignation, and the optimism of a brighter future. I also love the sound on it - more unpolished and 'raw', unlike the newer, more refined albums - gives a stronger feeling of emotion. Love it!!

I have four favourites when

I have four favourites when it comes to Phil's solo albums, all of which I like pretty equally.  But if I had to pick one, it would be 'But Seriously'. (The others being Face Value, Both Sides and Testify.)  The album had a good mixture of styles on it from upbeat rock songs like 'Hang In Long Enough' and 'Heaven' to simple pop ballads like 'Do You Remember' to conscience songs like 'Paradise', all of which were performed extremely well by everyone involved.  I also think this album contains some of Phil's best songwriting- he really came of age as a writer on this album- not to say he was a bad writer before- but this album is where lyrically things started becoming more cerebral and complex.  This also fell in the period where I think Phil's singing was really at it's peak.  Before he sounded a little strained at times- but here I think he found some technique that allowed him to sing without straining too much. But Seriously was also the first PC solo album I bought, having gotten into Genesis around or shortly after 'Invisible Touch' in the late 80s.

The most emotionally

The most emotionally affecting for me was Both Sides, practically my soundtrack for particularly memorable December, 1993.

Having given that stirring album due nod, I tend to favor Genesis members' initial solo albums as their best, and Phil 's first is no exception.

Hat's off to an unexpected revelation from Phil in 1981 and a resonant treasure now in Face Value!

all of them!

all of them!

That's a ditto for me to.  I

That's a ditto for me to.  I enjoy every song, I have ever heard, Phil do.

I've been waiting to weigh-in

I've been waiting to weigh-in on this thread until I heard the new album, and I’m thankful I did.  Although the material on Going Back is not of his own composition (with the exception of certain lyrical revisions), the creative effort that went into making it (from the imitation of the different styles to the retro sound quality) made it quickly rise in my opinion as my favorite album.  It’s doesn’t hurt that it’s the first album I’ve purchased that I knew most of the songs going into.  Personally, I feel that some of the songs on this album are better than the original versions (“Papa Was A Rolling Stone” comes to mind).  Simply brilliant album!

I can't choose either. I'm

I can't choose either. I'm listening to Both Sides now, in mine opinion that's really a jewel. But it wasn't always, I really get to jused to this album, but now I love it. Like I all love them. Some are happy some are sad. But they are all beautiful in there one way!! Thanks for all the great music Mr. Collins!
